Sammy’s Story

“Sammy” entered “Ginger’s Fund” as of 3/12/12. This little guy was found by Lexington Animal Control Officer Sam Fritts on a short, thick logging chain with no food or water. He was actually fed and given water before these photos were taken, so his belly is actually bigger in the photos than it was when he was found. He is around 25lbs underweight. His now previous owner has been charged with animal cruelty and his court date will be posted very soon. We have named him “Sammy” after Animal Control Officer Sam Fritts who rescued him. Sammy is a Chocolate color, American Pit Bull Terrier. He is a very friendly (both people and K9!), loving boy who is desperate not only of nutrition but of physical contact. He is only 1 ½ years old, and he is going to have a long road to recovery. He arrived at the Vet Office around 5:00pm on 3/12/12, he is currently being assessed and receiving the medical care that he needs. Sammy has tested positive for Heart worms. This makes his recovery not only challenging but also very expensive. We will need help from the public to help save this beautiful boy. Please donate if you can, and be sure to note that the donation is for “Ginger’s Fund”. He is currently being fully vetted, and neutered. He will have to gain quite a bit ofl weight before he will be able to start on his Heart-worm treatment. The treatment for Heart-worms is very hard on dogs, he will need to be in optimal health before he is a candidate. Keep Sammy in your thoughts and prayers. He is still active, but his body condition is deplorable, all of his muscle reserves are gone, except for a tiny area between his shoulder blades. Also, keep in mind that when the vet gives him the all clear he will need to go into a foster or permanent home. Please help share his story so we can ultimately give him the happy home that he deserves. As always he will be completely vetted, all of his medical expenses will be paid for by “Ginger’s Fund”, and he will also be neutered.
4/8/2012… We need some prayers and Happy Thoughts for “Sammy”, he is having complications from his heart-worm treatment. Last night the vet had to give him fluids, antibiotics and B12 – he was also sedated and crated. Sammy was running a fever (again), coughing and still very congested. They are trying to keep him as quite and comfortable as possible. While I was in the waiting room today – I could hear him coughing as they brought him out to the exam room. Damn the heart-worms!!! This little guy has got to pull through. He was found starving, hooked to a logging chain and now this. “Sammy” needs a break.
10/14/2012… Sammy is rushed to the vet. Trembling, not eating and excessive drinking of water. He is being cared for by Davidson Animal Hospital. After a couple of days of receiving fluids, antibiotics and pain meds, Sammy comes home only to return several days later with the same symptoms. After more of the same treatment, Sammy goes home on the 25th, trembling has not completely stopped and he will not eat dinner. I take “Sammy” to Westchester Vet, where he stays the weekend. On Monday, I’m told they suspect a tumor and suggest I take “Sammy” to Carolina Vet Specialists in Greensboro NC. His calcium levels are so high, they fear his kidneys may be damaged.
We have some devastating news. Sammy has been diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer. He is very weak and has not ate or drank anything since Friday. Chemotherapy is an option for him but they think he is too weak to undergo treatment and even if he would make it through he would only have a few months left to live. We cannot put him through that-it would be selfish on our part and too hard on Sammy.
Sammy is such a special boy and while he was never adopted he was given a wonderful home with his foster mom and FOS DCNC/Ginger’s Fund Founder Donna Grooms. He finally had a chance to live and run free off leash, something he has never been able to do before. He made a best friend, Benjamin (Donna’s other Ginger’s Fund foster), and they had so much fun together running around together out on the farm and playing together. They even dug a hole under the barn stalls so they could visit with each other while Donna was gone. Sammy’s life was horrible at his former residence and he never had a chance to learn joys of life until he met Donna.
This is heartbreaking news to take in. I wish you all had a chance to meet Sammy and see what wonderful soul he has. This boy is kind, considerate, and compassionate something that he learned all on his own without ever being shown it in his past life. How amazing.
Arrangements are being made for tomorrow and it is going to be a tough day. Please understand if the posting/updates are slow tomorrow because we will be with Sammy. Think of him, and tell your furry companions on the other side to be looking for him so they show him all the best napping spots and the best areas of his new wonderful fur-ever home.
