We received a called from the Davidson County Animal Shelter about a stray dachshund mix who came into the shelter with a bandaged leg. The shelter has no funding for vet care so they asked if we could help…Dr. Hedrick has named her Cinderella.

The extent of her injuries were unknown but it was obvious that there was more than a scratch under the homemade bandage job. A noticeable wound could be seen on her thigh and the horrendous smell of what was hiding behind the bandage filled the air around her. Cinderella was in a lot pain during her exam. She was sedated, given pain medication and Dr. Hedrick began to remove the long, tightly rolled bandage uncovering a horrible sight.

Cinderella’s Tibia is fully exposed and broken in half. The lowest part of her hind leg was wrapped sideways with her hind paw facing outward instead of inward, the tiny bones in her paw were broken with little pieces coming off, and necrosis had set in due to Crushing Syndrome as a result of her leg being wrapped too tight rotting away much of her legs skin, tissue and muscle.

The leg will likely have to amputated but the infection must be cleared first. Cinderella is on antibiotics and pain med’s and her leg is being soaked frequently in a medicated solution aimed to rid the infection. We are hoping that the infection has not entered into the exposed broken bones but there is no way to tell just how long her leg has been like this so time will tell.

Cinderella has been estimated to be 1.5 years old and weighs 7 pounds.
