Thomasville Animal Control Officer Candace Lewis was responding to an animal welfare check on 1/23/14 where she found this boy in desperate need of help. He was cold, tethered, with no shelter, no food, he had water but it was frozen solid and he was nothing but skin and bones. Officer Lewis knew that this boy needed immediate medial attention she called us and named him Chief.

Chief was seized and immediately taken to Davidson Animal Hospital. Through Dr. Hedrick’s exam Chief was listed at being around 2 yrs old. He is a large dog most likely a Great Dane/Lab mix and he weighed in at only 67 lbs. Dr. Hedrick said he needs to gain 25 lbs which would put him around 100 lbs at a healthy weight. Chief tested negative for Heartworms but he was positive for whip worms and loaded with hookworms. He also had fleas, open soars on his ears and his nails were so long he could not properly place his feet flat on the ground. He was immediately fed (he was so happy to finally have food), nails trimmed, vaccinated, he began his de-worming cycle and was all set up with a nice cozy blanket in the heated kennels to get some rest.

Chief was found in the nick of time. He would not have been able to make it through the night in single digit temps and wind chills below zero without food or shelter in his body’s state. Chief was so gentle and so appreciative of everyone, he knew we were all going to help him and his tail never stopped wagging.

*We will post all charges as they become available on our Facebook Page*

Please report cruelty/neglect and be very vigilant during the cold weather for animals in poor shape and/or without shelter. Animals are also susceptible to frost bite, hypothermia and death from the cold just like humans. If you see an animal in need of help do not hesitate. Call your local Police Department, Sheriffs Office, or Animal Control immediately. It could be the difference between life and death.
