Badly Injured- 6/24/14 Donations Needed

A call came into Thomasville Animal Control today (6/24/14) to pick up a dog from Southgate Veterinarian Clinic in Thomasville, NC. The dog was brought into Southgate Veternarian Clinic 3 days ago (6/21/14) by someone who claimed to have found him. The man who brought him in was driving a Dodge Ram Truck. He gave Southgate his name, address and phone number and then left to go home to pick up a deposit along with his ID…but the man never returned. The information provided to Southgate turned out to be fictitious and the dog who was desperately in need of medical attention was abandoned.
The dogs wounds were bandaged and his right rear leg was stitched to help hold the flesh together but his extensive needed medical treatment ceased due to having no one to cover his medical bills. After waiting 3 days for the man who dropped the dog off to return a pickup call was placed by Southgate to Thomasville Animal Control. Officer Bingham picked up the dog and brought him to the Davidson County Animal Shelter. Shortly after their arrival to the animal shelter we received a call for help from Shelter Director Judy Lanier and AC Officer Jack Bingham…we have named him Cooper.

Officer Bingham brought Cooper to Davidson Animal Hospital to receive the immediate care he desperately needed. Cooper is unable to walk so he was carried in. His wounds were hidden behind his bandages and even though he had to be in a great deal of pain (and had that worried look on his face) he gave everyone a kiss and was able to trust that everyone was trying to help him.
Cooper was sedated so the bandages could be removed. Officer Bingham brought in the vet card from Southgate with notes about his injuries but we were still shocked to see the injures that were under the bandages. Most of his nails are ripped off, he is missing digits on a few of his toes, the skin is torn off in many places all the way to the bone, he is missing one of his kneecaps and all of his extremities are badly damaged. It became quite obvious as to how he ended up in this condition.
Cooper’s injuries are consistent with being tethered and dragged, The fur on his neck was indented were a collar had obviously been worn for most of his life and his head along with his upper body was unscathed. Most likely Cooper was tethered on the back of a truck and either fell or jumped off leaving him dangling/hanging- dragging his lower body and extremities across the pavement. Dr. Hedrick said with the extent of his injuries he was dragged for quite some time, filing away the flesh and bone.
Dr. Hedrick has already started Cooper on antibiotics. He was also given pain meds and given a nice warm bath to clean his wounds, flea ridden coat, and fly bitten ears. His wounds were treated and left to air out a bit to help with the healing process. A catheter was placed in Cooper’s arm for fluids/medications and he was placed in a heated kennel in ICU. He will rest for awhile before undergoing further procedures. We will know more about his prognosis, scheduled treatments/surgeries and so forth in the coming days. Right now Cooper could really use some well wishes and prayers sent his way. More to come

I think every person that drops an animal off should be photographed and finger printed, this would prevent these scum bags getting away with treating these poor defenseless babies. OR just take every person that walks in the doors with a very good secret camera…..then at lease you would have something to try and find these horrible people… Also I am donating to help Cooper….

This absolutely breaks my heart. I pray that this sweet pup makes a speedy recovery and lives the rest of his life being loved as he so well deserves.

It is stupid to have a dog on the back of the truck,without the safety straps made just for that. I feel it was a horrible accident. I will give the guy the benefit of doubt. Most likely he didn't have the money to pay for the mistake so he did what he though would be the best. At least he took him,I am upset as much at the first vet for waiting three day and then sending him io shelter. Had it not been for the right people there at the shelter he would have been put down. I guess Cooper was really lucky the first vet was to tight to even put him down. Two wrongs don't usually make a right, but for Cooper it did because he now will get the proper care. You should have to give some kind of proof of who you are wen surrendering a animal.I live in Pennsylvania and our human society required you pay a fee when surrendering an animal but i guess in some area tat wouldn't do any good because they would probably dump the animal some where. But i still think a driver license a picture ID something should be required to stop these abusers Praying your recover sweet Angel

I can safely that from experience because my husband was a vet. and many a nightwear were called in by animal control and we would go in and treat the animal and make it comfortable without having any idea who it belonged to. I don't know what veterinary school he went to, but none of the many veterinarians I know would leave an animal in pain like that. He should be boycotted and his license should be revoked. I am horrified, to say the least. Where is his compassion???????

If he is not concerned he could have just left Cooper somewhere without a possibility of treatment. What is horrible is for the vet's clinic to do nothing for 3 days while Cooper is on pain 🙁 God bless us all, humans!

I would NEVER EVER take one of my animals to Southgate…EVER!!!! How in the world could they not treat this poor dog. I can not believe they left him for 3 days to suffer…how cruel.

I am heart broken for Cooper, but I am also a little angry to think the vet did not help this animal due to no payment. I am not so dumb that I do not realize this is a business and needs to profit in order to survive, but, how could a vet know this animal needed help desperately and not go ahead with treatment. Please tell me its not all about money. I would be pleased to know that I am confused about this situation because I consider this abuse also. God bless Cooper and the people that are taking care of him.

Just an FYI if everyone would read….the first vet did stabilize Cooper, provided treatment without pay for the 3 days he was there. A dog can't just lay at veterinary clinic in that condition and not be treated. Not all veterinarians have funds or are provided funds to treat animals at no cost. Abandonment laws are in place for a reason. I am thankful Dr. H is able to get help to provide care for Cooper but don't judge another place and make assumptions.

Nowhere in the article above does it state that Southgate Vet stabilized Cooper, gave him pain meds, or antibiotics. It does, however, state that medical attention ceased once no one came back to pay for the treatment. Either you're making assumptions or you know more based upon another source.

It also states above that treatment ceased when no one came to pay for him. Not sure what Southgate did for Cooper other than call animal control when no one showed up to pay.

sorry but the ves who had him originally should not have ceased treatment just because the owner or whom ever it was dropped him off and didnt return, Vets take an oath to heal these animals in need, 90percent of the costs involved are their fees not what they use, any vet who is not willing to step up to the plate an give freely of their time in cases like this should never have become a vet they are obviously only in it for the money.
It seems to me that there are two possibilities here. One of them is intentional abuse, the other is he was riding in the back of a pickup (or something similar) and fell, still tethered to the vehicle (in which case it would be an accident). If the latter is true, this goes to show why you DON'T have your dog ride in the back of a pickup. If the former is true, the person responsible needs to be skinned.
So sad.
A helpless animal at the mercy of someone who is a monster to allow something like this to happen. What kind of person does things to an animal. I hope whoever has done this face severe charges. They should be given the same treatment they gave to this helpless animal. This is pitiful and I pray this sweet pup lives, survives the emotional abuse and physical abuse he was treated with. This story should flood not only facebook but the Davidson Co. community. How can you deny this pup the healthcare he needs and he needs love and attention to the fullest. He deserves dog heaven on earth. I wish I had the funds to make this happen for him but maybe there is some sweet soul out there who will donate funds to help with this little guy.

I agree something should be done, but I'm afraid that if the "dropper" knew they would be identified, they'd probably not drop off the dog at all — leaving them to die. Someone will have a real sweetheart in Ginger.

do you do your job for free? the vet still has employees/power/utilities to pay and has to put food on the table, if every vet treated every hardship case that came in they would all be out of business!! they provided first aid and called the proper authorities.
This dog needs specialty care. He should be brought to Carolina Veterinary Specialists.
This is so sad to see poor Cooper in this condition. I pray he will make a full recovery and find a loving home where he will have someone to give him the love he deserves.
DAVIDSON ANIMAL HOSPITAL has saved this baby. It was Southgate Vet Clinic that provided the very minimal care.

For all of you misinformed, I was working at Southgate Veterinary Clinic when this happened. It is against the law for a veterinary office to take any animal in and not treat it. Even though we were given false information we still took him straight to the tub where I cleaned his wounds and removed the assault from his wounds. He was so sweet and loving then we dried him and took him to surgery. We treated every place on his body including the fly bites and fleas. We gave him a cap star to kill all the living fleas but it only works for 24 hours. The fleas they treated were the hidden eggs that hatched later on. He was in ICU at our clinic on pain meds and stabilized. He was eating and drinking and using the bathroom. We had over $1000 invested in the dog out of the clinic's pocket. We do not have a nonprofit program, and once we ran out of funds we sent "cooper" to a facility well equipped with extra staff to accommodate his needs better. I personally sent Dr. Hedrick every picture of everything we did and we have been working closely with him. As for the man with the fake address and phone number it is still under investigation. So know the whole story before you judge. All protocol was followed and the right actions were made.

I rarely comment on anything and keep my opinions to myself the majority of the time but I can't sit back and let anyone call that pity money! Instead of blaming, let's all focus on helping Ginger's Fund and Dr. Hedrick with all they do! God bless them!
I'm crying as I read this.I'm praying for Cooper to be out of pain as much as Greg can help him.I love my dog and this is so heartbreaking to see this precious dog in so much pain.

I lost my cousin Kenneth Dale Johnson, Jr. (known to my family as Nubin) today. Nubin didn't make it, but I want to give a donatation in his memory to Cooper and pray that he makes it and heals better than before and gets a loving home!

Yes Aireal Chapman I'm an electrician and I have done plenty of charity work for people and animals . wiring heat lamps in dog houses to keep them warm, installing underground wire so that dogs could be safe from harm outside their homes . I've helped elderly people,single parents, who need work done but can't afford it . All for free , even bought a lot of materials out of my pocket . And I'll promise you I make nowhere near the money a vet makes .

I'm just glad the guy brought the dog to a place it could be helped . It may be that the guy didn't have the money to pay the vet and was hoping that the poor thing could get help . He may have found the dog somewhere in that condition. It don't make since that he would torture an animal that way and then take it for help. There's no need to blame for what wasn't done , but give thanks for what was done . But if this was done intentionally I hope they find who did it , and let everyone know who they are . the law might not can do much but it would be nice for the people around them to know what kind of person they are.I could imagine there would be some who would physically show their disapproval .
I am an RVT,I have sworn that oath! I work at a private limited intake shelter, I know ethics and caring more then most, but I also know Vets cant treat every sad case that come in the door for free. If they did they would all go out of business and not be able to help at all.There is a reason why our field has one of the highest suicide rates, we do this to help animals, but for many reasons we can't save them all. We are lucky where I work to have staff whose job it is to get us donations and grants, we treat things many shelters won't/can't (parvo & heartworm are the 2 biggest) but I am also realistic that people running a small business like a Vet practice don't have that luxury, and its not fair to punish them in a public forum for it. It is stated in the story that the injuries were attended to before animal control was called, my guess is they waited 3 days because in most areas that is the standard hold time. I'm glad a clinic did step up for this dog, but how can you expect every clinic to do so?

I know your a "stay at home mom" but is your partner able to work for free? Whatever s/he does to bring home pay, what if they decided to not charge? Would you choose to not feed your own kids because someone wanted him/her to work for free? Then why expect a vet to do so? The real criminal is the person who brought the dog in, if it was an accident of some sort he should have had/found/borrowed whatever the $ to treat his dog, if it was intentional, he should suffer!!
Never make a animal suffer because of money…….If your a vet I know you can do it…..God will send that cost back to you……

I personally don't understand why the Southgate vets didn't call the police while they were taking the guys information. Also, if there isn't already a law to prohibit dogs from being in the open backs of trucks by now, there SHOULD BE! People, come on now! A little common sense goes a very long way!

MOST VETS ARE MONEY HUNGRY ! ALL THE FIRST VET DIDNWAS COVER UP THE WOUNDS ,AND THEN LET THE POOR DOG SUFFER IN PAIN. SHAME,SHAME,SHAME ON ALL THE VETS THAT ARE LIKE THAT, AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF VETS LIKE THIS ONE.
I am sickened to see that anyone would do this to a beloved dog that has nothing to offer but his devotion to his master . This "man" if that is what you call him should be found and brought to justice..

I don't know what Southgate's role was, but I know this – the vet does and if it was lacking — well, that'll be between him and The Lord!!
I also know there are some loving, generous animal lovers here on fb and I'll bet we'll all come together and form that village that helps to get things done.. I surmise a big chunk of Cooper's medical bills will be covered by the village.. 🙂 Kudos to all who have/are and will help Cooper through this horrible event.. Praying for your speedy recovery handsome boy!!
