Lexington Animal Control Officer Sam Fritts and the Lexington Police Department were responding to animal welfare call on 12/17/13 when they found a male Walker Coonhound along with a smaller female Shepherd mix in need of help. The male was chained and the female dog was in a outdoor kennel. Both dogs had no food or water. The male dog was emaciated and needed medical help. They were seized and immediately taken to Davidson Animal Hospital to receive the medical care they needed. We named them Sam and Ellie.

Sam was dehydrated and in desperate need of nourishment. Ellie (who is half his size) weighs 38 lbs and Sam weighed in at 37 lbs. Due to his large stature he should be closer to 60 lbs. You can see how big he once was based on the collar he had on.

During the male dogs exam Dr. Hedrick noticed that his hind legs are slightly different lengths. He examed his pelvis and said he could feel a fracture in one of the bones and his pelvis was collapsed. He doesn’t think that surgery will be needed right now. It appears to be an old injury that was never properly treated so it healed wrong. Dr. Hedrick will know more once he does a few x-rays of the area.

Dr. Hedrick immediately fed them, he was starving. He engulfed his food and was searching everywhere for more . The female was more focused on getting water to quench her thirst. She was scared by the movement of the water bowl on the floor but braved her fears to drink every last drop.

Medical Findings:

Both dogs were aged right at 2 yrs old. They have intestinal worms, fleas (all being treated) and both also tested positive for Heartworms :(. They are currently being treated, vaccinated, bathed, fed (he will be fed frequent meals to help him get his weight back up), and his ears will be treated and cleaned-they were very dirty).

We are in need of donations for their medical care. We have had 9 cruelty cases come in since November 4th all needing extensive medical care, 3 are Heartworm Positive and in need of treatment. No amount is too small and every penny goes directly to the animals.

Donations can be made online by clicking on the donate button at the top of your screen or by mail to: Ginger’s Fund FOS-DCNC, PO Box 1036, Thomasville, NC 27361. Thank you for your support

*Cruelty charges will be filed on their now previous “owners”. We will post all charges and court dates as they become available.
