We received a call today from Thomasville Animal Control requesting for help for a stray dog who was missing most of her front paw and part of her tail. Officer Bingham has been trying to catch her for a few weeks but she was scared, injured, emaciated and would always stay out of reach. Luckily a nice lady living close by was willing to help. She began putting out food for her everyday and the injured, emaciated girl began to gain weight. Neither Officer Bingham nor the lady had been able to get close enough to her to catch until today. To Officer Bingham’s surprise once he caught her she was no longer scared, instead she showered everyone with lots of love and sloppy kisses. He knew that she needed medical care so he called us for help and brought her into Davidson Animal Hospital.
During her exam Dr. Hedrick pointed out the scar pattern on her paw and he knew exactly what happened…she had stepped into an animal trap (snap/foot trap). There is no telling how long this sweet girl was stuck in the trap but it was long enough to cut off the circulation to most of her paw causing it to rot it off. She has already completely healed leaving only the scar and one toe.
Her tail is a different story however. 2/3 of it is missing, the bone is exposed and it is infected. No-one knows for sure how this happened to her but it could have also been stuck in trap or it could have been cut off by god only knows who or what. It does appear like her tail injury happened after her paw injury but there is no way to know for sure.
The good news is that her joints are still perfectly intact so Dr. Hedrick believes that she may be a good candidate for a prosthetic paw. He does think that her tail is going to need surgery after the infection is cleared and that she will probably need surgery on the remainder or her paw if a prosthetic is an option (otherwise a further amputation may be needed). She is also in heat but thankfully not pregnant yet so she will spayed asap.
During the exam it was noted that she was underweight, she has previously had 1-2 litters of pups, aged at 2 yrs old, and while she did have fleas and intestinal worms she tested negative for Heartworms (!). She is now vaccinated, de-fleaed, being de-wormed, getting lots of yummy nutritional meals and she has a nice warm kennel with a cozy bed to sleep in.
We are currently trying to come up with a great name for her that fits her awesome personality. She is the sweetest girl who loves to give lots of kisses and cuddles. Please keep her in your thoughts, it is so sad to think of what this poor girl has been through and what she will have to go through in her recovery.
Donations are greatly needed for her extensive medical care.
